About this spot

Colombian Comfort in Altamonte Springs

I visited Medellin Gourmet - Latín Gastrobar on East Altamonte Drive last Saturday evening, and the colorful murals covering the exterior walls immediately signaled that this wasn't going to be your typical casual dining experience. Inside, the bright dining room had a welcoming energy, and I noticed picnic tables set up outside for anyone who wanted to enjoy their meal in the Florida evening air. The atmosphere felt authentically Colombian, with Latin music playing and a mix of locals and Colombian expats filling the tables.

I started with the Hot Dog Parcero, which is unlike any hot dog I've ever had in the United States. This Colombian-style creation came loaded with sausage, melted cheese, crispy bacon, crunchy potato sticks, and—most surprisingly—a quail egg on top. The combination of textures and flavors was incredible: creamy, crunchy, savory, and rich all at once. It's indulgent, over-the-top, and absolutely delicious—the kind of dish that makes you understand why Colombian street food has such a devoted following.

Meaty Main Courses

For my main course, I ordered the Bistec a la Criolla, which featured a well-seasoned steak topped with the house sauce and a perfectly fried egg. The steak was tender and flavorful, the house sauce added a tomato-based richness with peppers and onions, and the fried egg brought everything together with its runny yolk. It came with rice, beans, and sweet plantains on the side—a complete, satisfying meal that showcased classic Colombian home cooking.

My friend got the Ropa Vieja, which is seasoned shredded beef that's been slow-cooked until it's fall-apart tender. The beef was rich and savory, served with the same sides of rice, beans, and plantains. We also spotted the Pechuga con Camarones Al Ajillo heading to another table—grilled chicken topped with garlic shrimp that looked and smelled incredible. The portions here are generous, and the food is unapologetically meaty and comforting, perfect for groups or anyone with a serious appetite.

Authentic Latin Hospitality

What stood out most at Medellin Gourmet was the genuine hospitality. The staff was warm and helpful, clearly proud of the food they were serving and happy to explain dishes or make recommendations. The casual atmosphere makes it a great spot for groups—I noticed several large tables celebrating together, which fits the communal, festive vibe of Colombian dining culture.

The menu goes beyond what I tried, featuring burgers, steaks, and other hot dog variations alongside the traditional Colombian plates. It's the kind of place where Colombian expats come to taste home, and curious food lovers come to explore authentic flavors they might not find elsewhere in Altamonte Springs.
